Evergreen flowering shrubbery should be pruned and shaped after they bloom.
It's time to think about fertilizing trees, shrubs, and emerging perennials so that they can get off to a great start as the temperatures increase.
Time to plant your late seasosn bulbs, such as dahlias, canna, and any other frost tender varieties. Place a stake in the ground next to your tuber when planting. You can then tie the dahlia to the stake periodically during its rapid growth phase.
It's time to get vegetable gardens started. It's safe to plant tomatoes and other frost tender vegetables. Tomatoes need support as they grow, so use cages, stakes, or other suppor now before the growth becomes too vigorous to tie up. Be sure to add calcium to the soil now to avoid blossom end rot when tomatoes are forming. A garden safe fungicide applied now will help prevent late blight from forming in late summer, at just about the time tomatoes are to be harvested.
Perennial beds need to be fertilized, groomed, divided, etc. now. A nice layer of mulch will help prevent moisture loss and help keep out weeds.
It's time to plant those beautiful hanging baskets and showy annual beds!
